Our Story

We are the mighty fighting Vikings

Wynnum Vikings AFC is an Australian Rules Football Club located in the ever growing Wynnum-Manly District to the east of Brisbane City. The Wynnum Vikings is a  small but strong family and community orientated club. The club actively participates in community activities and special events. We support the wellbeing of players and the broader community through our Lady's Day events having raised donations and awareness for women's health and domestic and family violence services. We also raise  awareness of mental health within the Viking family.  Our mission is to provide a fun and safe environment for its players and members to learn and participate in the sport of AFL - where families are welcomed and have the opportunity to socialise and enjoy themselves.

Although the Vikings were officiall founded in 1966, the Viking's DNA goes back to 1905, when records from that era recording Aussie Rules being played in the district.  We pride ourselves on our "blue collar" routes. Our 'blue collar" ethic involves hard work, loyalty,  fairness and toughness on the field as well as a "fair go" off the field. We aim to be friendly and welcoming to visitors, supporters, umpires, volunteers and players and their families.

We have a history of competing above our size with success. Our Seniors won premierships in 1974, 2003, 2008 and 2009 and were runners up in 2006, 2007 and 2019.  Our Reserves won a premiership in 1998 and were runners up in 2019. Our Youth teams have a record of success having won Premierships (U12 Boys - 1983 and 2012, U14 Boys - 2014) and playing in Grand Finals (U12 Boys - 2022, U14 - 2022).

Although our Seniors and Reserves were in a rebuilding phase in 2023 the club has a bright future. We have strong and growing numbers of players in our football programmes. We field Superstars, Juniors, Youths, Girls and Women and Master's teams competing as well as running an Auskick programme every yeear.. We are coming off the 2023 season where the Under 13.5 Division 5 Boys, Under 13.5 Division 3 Boys and Under U15 Girls all made finals. The Under 13.5 Division 3 Boys were Minor Premiers. We have a growing number of women and girls playing with the Vikings. In 2023 we had Under 9, Under 11 and Under 15 girl's teams playing. In 2024, Wynnum is aiming to field a Senior Women's team for the first time.

Club History

Early records depict games being played from 1905. Originally known as the 'Tricolours', Wynnum played wearing the colours of blue, red and white. Premierships were won in 1909 and 1920. The club missed participating in seasons 1912, 1922 and 1924.

The club was officially founded in 1966. Records are unclear as to when the club started playing in the dark blue/light blue colours, but over time yellow managed to sneak into the mix as well. Having played in jerseys with a yellow flare for many years and peaking to a Youth mostly yellow jersey in 2011.  The current dark and light blue combination has been in place since 2012.
